Welcome to the History of Medicine Library catalogue

The History of Medicine Library contains a leading medical history collection made up of items from Australasia and around the world. Dating back to 1940, the Library was established by the College as a clinical library, before shifting its focus to medical history in the 1950s.

The Library is home to thousands of items, including:

  • monographs
  • journals
  • archives and photographs
  • artworks
  • antique medical and surgical instruments
  • rare books dating back to the 16th century
  • and much more

Due to COVID-19, the Library is currently closed until further notice.

During opening hours, College members are welcome to explore our heritage collections and members of the public may visit by appointment

Your Visit

The History of Medicine Library is open for viewing and research from 9am to 5pm weekdays.

You’ll need to make an appointment before you visit. Send an email to library@racp.edu.au

Our reception staff will welcome you and direct you to the Librarian/ Curator.

If you’re a researcher or non-member please note the following guidelines:

  • appointments should be confirmed with the Librarian prior to visiting
  • no food or drinks are permitted in the Library
  • use of photographic equipment without flash is permitted
  • scanning of most material is permitted and will be undertaken by staff on request
  • copyright must be adhered to for all relevant items
