Lowe was a founder of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.
This reference work was popular among students of medicine. 'It was constructed partly in the form of a catechism, or conversation between the author and a student, and partly a description of surgical techniques, medical treatments, and examples from his practice in France.'
All editions of “The Whole Course of Chirurgerie” were practical and accessible to a wider audience as this was the first surgical textbook written in English, rather than Latin. It was printed in London as Glasgow had no printer at that time.
