February's blogpost is slightly late due to remediation works in the History of Medicine Library. During the last few weeks, the Library has been closed for asbestos removal and all that that entails. Routine building maintenance uncovered the presence of asbestos in several areas of the ceiling and air conditioning risers. While asbestos was once a common building material valued for its durability and fire resistance, we have long known it poses health risks when disturbed. Out of an abundance of caution, the library temporarily closed in December, 2025, so that a comprehensive removal and remediation process could be undertaken. Certified contractors carefully sealed off affected areas, removed contaminated structural components, and conducted extensive air quality testing throughout the building.

In addition to the asbestos, for many months the library has been fending off multiple problems including mould outbreaks. The discovery of asbestos meant that air conditioning units had to be switched off, and as a result temperatures fluctuated with the outside weather and humidity. Dehumidifiers were deployed to keep the collection protected from mould. A recent visitor commented on the Library's 'staleness', justifiably, as vents were taped over and lighting issues made viewing of material difficult. Thankfully, with the finalisation of works, these issues have been addressed and the Library is again welcoming visitors and researchers alike.

While recognising the building issues, the visitor also commented:

"I feel fortunate to have by chance visited 145 Macquarie. I would encourage all Fellows to do so at some point. There is no rush for you to do so; we are all time poor and one would hope and expect that the facility will be there for many, many years to come. But seriously, you should all call in at 145 at some point, see the library, and just spend a few minutes of contemplation in the Fellows' lounge.

It is your College, you should visit. It might surprise you on the upside; it did me."
